Things to see in Iceland, part 3

The Golden Circle

This is the reason you visit Iceland; with hardly any large cities, no history and very little culture you can be sure to experience some of the most incredible natural sites in the world. Covered in Ice for much of the year and if you’re lucky enough to see it covered in snow you’ll soon fill your memory card. Over 30 volcanic eruptions have occurred in the past two centuries with one leaving a lava field stretching 56km2; the country living on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge shows the world is very much alive.

The Golden Circle trip will take you to the Geysir geothermal area, the grandppapy of hot springs where you will see water explode from the inner core of the Earth rising to up to 70metres from the surface every few minutes. Stopping at Gullfoss waterfall a massive and powerfull waterway that drops 31m and travels along a deep ravine that is believed to have been created when a volcano gave way; the masses of water pushed itself outwards taking with it tonnes of rock carving a deep valley on its path.

Finally you will get a break at Althingi. This trip will cost you about 8,600 krona (about £45 – 50).
