Yesterday, for one day only, Vauxhall Motors re-opened their original bowling club dating back to more than a century ago in 1905 to transform Brick Lane into a professional bowling green.
Imagine Mary Poppins meets Charlie and the Chocolate Factory going on a colourful, summery Sunday adventure complimented with top bands, dancing, lounging and stylish 4-wheeled art commissions - all inspired by the Vauxhall Motors Bowls Club of past decades.
As guests queued up to try their arm at lawn bowling, Matt Horne played some lovely summer tunes. After his set the lovely Rick Edwards, dressed up for the occasion and looking very ‘on bowls’ took him rolling some very classy balls along the lawn beating him by several games. Man Like Me, band of the moment treated bowlers to a super special performance, followed by legendary DJ Toddla T who finished off the day, providing the perfect chill out soundtrack.
Thousands of hopefuls applied online for a free ticket to the exclusive, one-off event and those lucky enough to win a ticket were greeted by a multi-coloured club house, psychedelic English garden flowers, typical british picnic food – not forgetting celebrity host Rick Edwards (T4) who hung out eating ice cream and adjudicated some tricky games.
Special four-wheeled art commissions were showcased on the day, including a grass image covered Corsa, which housed the event scoreboard and a convertible Astra Twintop; Vauxhall’s streamlined version of the classic ice cream van with a twist, stocked with free ice creams and lollies. A New Astra created by brilliant illustrator Jamie Cullen, who has also designed the event’s eye catching logo, will completed the colourful trio.
