Munich
Looking for a cosmopolitan city that has a lot to offer? Munich should be on your list then. Like no other city, Munich offers tradition and innovation side by side. Being the center of attraction for many international tourists and companies, the city has a lot to offer to the gay travellers - be it gay bars or pubs or eclectic night spots.
Munich is particularly famous for the beer, the Hofbräuhaus as well as the Oktoberfest, an outdoor festival / party taking place yearly at the end of September. The traditional “Münchner” is proud of his origin and does not mind showing himself in the famous pair of lederhosen. But even besides those, Munich has a variety of cultural places worth visiting. Being almost 900 years old, it has been the center of many historically important events that had an influence on Germany.
As the third largest city in the country and being the capital of the State Bavaria, Munich attracts multi national inhabitants, with almost ¼ of the population not being German. Many national and international companies base here contributing to the cosmopolitan flair.
The mixture of people, culture, tradition and cosmopolitan influence generates and atmosphere that cannot be found anywhere else. Although being a major city, Munich has remained local, leaving a warm and welcoming feel when you wander through the streets.
It's a very quiet city with not much seeming to happen, extremely clean and well laid out so it is easy to get around - manageable by foot but there is a great tram and tube service.
Munich is also the most expensive city in Germany, so make sure you budget wisely. All restaurants only really cater for people in German, so make sure you have a phrase book or dictionary.
The nightlife in Munich can be exhausting with over 5,000 establishments to choose from. The gay scene is mainly located around the Gaertnerplatz area. Here you will find bars, restaurants and shops with plenty of opportunities for gay wishes. Many bars are members only, but it only takes five minutes to become a member and is open to everyone - very few charge to become a member.
Do not miss to go to Hotel Deutsche Eiche, where you can get information about the gay community in Munich. Located in the heart of the queer scene, it is the perfect place to start your adventure.
