Rio de Janeiro is a senic city on the east coast of Brazil. It is surrounded by mountains, lined with gorgeous beachs and filled with friendly people. Food options are plentyful and prices are fair. Carnaval, usually in February, is the city's lagest celebration of the year, but New Year's is also a popular time to visit. Being in the southern hemisphere, these two times are their summer, so it is hot...seriously, and I'm not just talking about the weather.
Ipanema, more specifically Farme de Amoedo and the surronding blocks is a hot spot for gay friendly sunning, parting and eating. Rio is a stunningly beautiful city, and Ipanema the center of the gay beach culture in Rio. Always croweded, especailly during Carnaval, all you need to take to the beach with you is some cash to rent an umbrella and chairs, and make sure to have a little extra for the caprihinis. You are sure tomake new friends from all over the world. The views, of the ocean, mountains and hot boys surround you on all sides. Make sure to stay for the sunset!
Christ the Redeemer is also a point of interest. From the top of Corcovado mountain, this 30m high statue overlooks the city. Views from the top are a fantastic 360 degrees. Go early if it is high season to avoid the lines.
For food, ZaZa's in Impanema just a couple of blocks from Farme de Amoedo is a Brazilian/Moroccan fusion. For seafood, Sayticoy in Ipanema serves up the best fresh seafood in a light northern Itailian style. And, for a beautiful dining experience overlooking the city from a mountain view, check out check out Aprazivel (http://www.aprazivel.com.br/) in Santa Tersa.
