Copacabana

Overview

Copacabana is a great beach destination just south of Rio de Janeiro main city - Downtown and Centro. By Metro it takes about 15 minutes, bus takes about 30 minutes or you can get there in 20 minutes by taxi.

Copacabana has little in the way of clubs and bars but has an excellent high street of shops to buy clothing at reduced prices compared to Europe and USA.

The only other thing the area is famed for is Barry Manilow.

Culture

Copacabana's sea front is largely dominated by hotels, however the main street and further north is residential. It is very busy with local Carioca's and residents, but there is not much to enjoy in the area.

Equality

Copacabana is more acceptable than much of the rest of Rio de Janeiro, with many European and American travellers it's culture almost bases itself on tourism. For gay and lesbian people Ipanema is the choice location for socialising.

Travel Information

Take taxis - it is generally cheaper and easier than bus or Metro.
