Cape Town

Overview

Cape Town is the sunny, sport loving and sociable centre of South Africa. This is the Africa the world wants to see, with a vibrant community set in amongst beautiful beaches, endless vineyards and the astounding Table Mountain.

Culture

Cape Town has a history as a gay destination, and it’s not hard to see why. Resident gays claim that Cape Town is the most homosexual area in South Africa. Areas to head for include the De Waterkant area, where you’ll find a cluster of gay bars and clubs such as Bronx Bar, Angels and Club 55. There is also a good smattering of gay guesthouses and B&Bs to cater for the influx of LGBT tourists. Then there are the beaches: Sandy Bay is a nudist beach with a large proportion of gay men, whilst for those who wish to retain just that little bit of mystery can head to the Third Beach, which is not exclusively gay, but might as well be.

Equality

Since 1996, it has been illegal in South Africa to discriminate against anyone on the grounds of their race, gender or sexual orientation.

Travel Information

International flights to Cape Town normally go direct to Cape Town International, but some require a change at Johannesburg. You can reach Cape Town by bus from various major African states using interstate services, and the same applies for train travellers.
