Honolulu is a destination stunning natural beauty, warm hospitality and great cuisine. Its proximity to Waikiki’s gorgeous beaches is another main attraction.
There is almost too much to feast your eyes on in Honolulu. Natural attractions include Diamond Head, a majestic volcanic hill, the exotic Foster Botanical Garden, and the Hawaii Nature Centre. Honolulu is also the only place in the US where you can find a royal palace; the ‘Iolani Palace, home of King Kalakauna in the late Nineteenth Century, and the Queen Emma summer palace are both open to the public.
Gay culture is vibrant in Honolulu. Heading to Waikiki, you will find the majority of gay bars and clubs, many just a few hundred yards from the white sandy beaches that make Hawaii famous. Gay beaches, naturally, are some of the best in the world. The aptly-named Queen’s Surf is the most popular, and has a snack bar and facilities nearby. For somewhere a little quieter, but just as gay, try the beach under Diamond Head, just below the lighthouse. This gay beach is just as attractive, but be prepared with food, water and sun protection as there are no facilities nearby.
Notable gay clubs include Angles, a breezy bar that offers wifi, pool, dancing and as much cruising as you can handle. As usual, it attracts a mostly male crowd. The only gay club licensed to stay open late (4am) is Fusion, again aimed at men, which offers live DJs, dancers, strippers, drag shows and video screenings. Hula’s is a gay institution, being the first ever gay venue in Hawaii and founded over 30 years ago. The venue draws in gays, lesbians and straights, older and younger patrons, and in the past, celebrities such as Elton John and Dolly Parton. Retaining a chilled-out Hawaiian flavour, the venue runs beach parties, Rockband nights, and the usual weekend party nights with live DJs and dancers. It also serves food during the day. For lesbians exclusively, try out the Black Garter Café, a casual club that offers both dancing and lounging in the comfortable corners, allowing you to kick back with a cocktail.
The gay scene thrives in this laid back part of the US, and you can enjoy a generally accepting atmosphere here.
You can fly into Honolulu International from a number of international destinations.
