Rehoboth Beach is something of a mongrel destination, being both a popular family tourist resort and a gay centre. Nightlife and beach life are the main attractions of this odd but appealing place, and gay culture thrives in places.
In a destination where beaches and gayness are the main attractions, it follows that there will be several gay beaches, and this is true for Rehoboth Beach. North Shores is the quieter option, and is more of a lesbian beach than anything else, offering snacks and drinks as well as beach umbrellas and chairs to hire. On the other side of the jetty is Poodle Beach, which is by far the more scene-orientated of the two. Hundreds of younger gay men cram onto the beach and take advantage of the nearby boardwalk with amusements, food and drink available.
After a day on the beach, the choice of gay bars and clubs is almost overwhelming. Cloud 9 is one of the most popular; though very small, it regularly features top DJs and has an outdoor patio at the back. The Double L caters to older gay men into leather and Levis, and the Blue Moon brings in gay men for the late afternoon period before heading to clubs later. Though lesbians tend to head to Cloud 9 on Friday nights, there are other venues that attract lesbians more generally. The Bird Cage draws in a great mix of lesbians, gays and straights, as well as locals and tourists, and serves tropical drinks to go with the occasional live DJ or drag act. The Frogg Pond, a bar/restaurant, plays live music and runs two karaoke nights a week, is also popular with lesbians and gays alike.
Aside from gay beaches and clubs, there are a few sights worth seeing in the area. For a break from cruising, check out the Henlopen Theatre Project, which runs classes and performances of various drama all summer. Cape Henlopen State Park is another place easy on the eyes, offering both the Lewes Lighthouses and great rare birdwatching opportunities.
Given the fact that Rehoboth Beach relies on gay tourism for a sizeable proportion of its income, the attitude towards gays and lesbians is generally very friendly.
You can reach Rehoboth from a number of US destinations via Greyhound and Carolina Trailways buses.
