Hydra is one of the classiest of the Greek islands. Here you will find celebrities and the well-to-do enjoying their second homes, cruises or expensive holiday packages. There is an attractive modern harbour that draws in plenty of tourists trade, and the absence of motorised transport helps to both quieten the place down and slow the pace of life.
Gay-friendly bars and clubs are very few and far between in Hydra, but there are plenty of gay hotels and guesthouses that can provide all the pleasures you are looking for. A trip to Hydra has an emphasis on the individual and on luxury, rather than on cheap hotels which are just used as a base between binge drinking trips. Gay and gay-friendly hotels include Leto, Angelica VIP, Mistral, and the Mira Mare. All offer at least three-star accommodation, so prepare to be waited on as you relax after a day on the beach. Aside from these, there is not really a gay scene in Hydra. It is more of a destination to relax in for some time away from the scene, or perhaps lavish a lover with luxury; do not go expecting drinking, drag nights and leather bars.
Gay equality is not top of the agenda in Hydra, so discretion is advised. Given the tourist influence there, however, it is a relatively safe destination for gay and lesbian travellers.
You can reach Hydra by boat from Piraeus, Poros, Aegina, Methena, and Spetses.
