Costa Rica

Overview

Costa Rica is one of the world’s most precious natural reserves. Almost 30% of the country is protected, from the dry forests to the cloud forests to the beaches. Hundreds of protected species of plants and animals call Costa Rica their home. With all of this, it’s not surprising that taking in some of that amazing wildlife is part of the perfect trip here, but it’s not all nature. There is plenty of gay nightlife too, as well as the attractions of the capital, San Jose.

Culture

There is so much to take in when in Costa Rica that it’s hard to sum it all up. For urban culture, try the attractions of the country’s grand capital city, San Jose. Nature-lovers could try visits to Puerto Viego de Talamanca, Parque Nacional Manuel Antonio, or Parco Nacional Carara for sightings of rare monkeys, birds and crocodiles.

Gay culture is not particularly visible in most of Costa Rica, but is most concentrated in San Jose. La Avispa is a popular club attracting both gays and lesbians with its dance floor, TV screen and pool tables. El Bochinche is another mixed bar, but much more upmarket and expensive. Bogarts City attracts mostly men, serving food and putting on various entertainment such as dancers and drag. Déjà vu is perhaps the most popular gay club. Again drawing a mixed clientele, the dress code is smarter and the shows are more professional.

Equality

Tourists are welcome in Costa Rica as the tourist trade is its major source of income, and so gay and lesbians are tolerated. It is, however, advisable to be discreet to avoid any unpleasant conflict.
