GAYLIFE IN TURKEY

Homosexuality is legal in Turkey and the age of consent is 18. Although police raids of bars and discos were common a few years ago, legal paragraphs aimed to protect the moral standard are rarely implemented these days. The attitude in the larger cities is becoming more tolerant, even though the influence of Islam affects the daily lives of many people. This growing tolerance is due to the influence of the tourists on the one hand and the possible acceptance in the EU on the other. In public we suggest you exercise discretion. In private situations or in the dark you can act more permissively.

In 2004 a Gay Pride Week took place in Istanbul and a group of gay and lesbian activists traveled to Ankara to hold discussions regarding homosexuality with members of parliament and attempt to improve the legal situation of homosexuals. Turkey has a lot to offer, even for gay and lesbian visitors. There are wonderful coastlines, nature areas, excellent cuisine and a rich, multifaceted culture. In addition the locals are extremely friendly and hospitable.

Culture

Istanbul's cultural life, both traditional and contemporary, is easily equal to that of London and New York, if not as well publicized. Matching the city's exploding youth population, there are a growing number of festivals, galleries, new music venues and film centers and, within the last decade, Turkish artists have begun to make an international impact. There are now a number of independent record companies in the city releasing experimental works that combine Turkish traditional artists with contemporary groups and new venues where this new music is showcased. In particular, however, the Istanbul Kultur ve Sanat Merkezi (IKSV, or Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Art puts on a series of international festivals equal to that of any European city, except that prices are usually lower.

Equality

The "rules of behavior" are not always easy to understand. The rules when chatting up are: Turkish men let you know when they are interested. A few phrases in Turkish are of great importance and help immensely. Due to the economic situation casual prostitution is common. This not always obvious initially. Sex in the dark or remote public places is dangerous! It is better to visit the listed Hamams, or a basic hotel (both parties will need to leave a passport/ID card at reception, making everything a little safer) or the last possibility is the private home.

Travel Information

There are two airports for Istanbul, Ataturk International located on the European side and Sabiha Gokcen located on the Asian side.

Most flights come into Ataturk, however budget flights like Easyjet arrive at Sabiha Gokcen.
