Antwerp is the capital of the Flanders region, as part of Belgium that has a history of tolerance, acceptance of difference. It has been offering full civil marriage rights to gay couples since 2003 and was the second country in the world to eliminate all references to gender in the marriage laws.
It is not surprising then that Flanders has a very lively gay scene, hospitable people, rich cultural activities and fabulous restaurants to offer. Each city has its own unique quality and appeal just waiting to be discovered and explored.
Antwerp's small but beautifully crafted streets play host to bars, coffee houses, restaurants, museums and excellent Belgian architecture. The city is easy to get around by foot, cycle or public transport.
As the centre of the European Union Belglium and Antwerp pretty much stick to the values of Europe, with warm welcomes and limitless tolerance Antwerp is a diversity champion. With over 150 nationalities among its over 450,000 population playing host to multiple gay bars and clubs and provision of gay marriage in its grand and central town hall many nearby countries can be envious of its achievements.
Antwerp has been occupied by nearly every nationality and reigning power over the centuries and today enjoys its full independence.
Equality is more or less a redundant word in Antwerp - it's almost impossible to know the meaning of the word in a city that is so advanced, tolerant, diverse and accepting of all cultures, lifestyles and people. It is relaxed, homely, open and interesting.
