Riga

Overview

Riga the capital of Latvia is located on the Baltic Sea coast. It is the largest city and the centre of Riga has been declared a Unesco World Heritage Site. Lativa is independent since 17th of September 1991, before that it belonged the Soviet Union and it was one of the most economically well-off and industrialized part of the Soviet Union. It is divided up into half Russians and half Latvians, and that is the interesting think as two totally different cultures live that close together.

Culture

It is still a long way to go before you can compare gay rights in Riga to other European cities.Compared to other Baltic cities it is not that catholtic but still relatively conservative. The first try to implement a pride was in 2005 but at the end there were more protesters than participants…In 2006 it was a bit better but still the participants faced a lot with protestors. Riga offers a wide range of operas, theatres and museums.
