Cologne

Overview

Is one of the four largest cities of Germany and one of the oldest cities as well. It is located in North Rhine Westphalia and it lies on the river Rhine. If you are planning to visit Cologne, you should come in the summer as there are a lot of beautiful parks and bear gardens in the Rhine area where you can sit and enjoy.

If you are into history you will find several museums and of course the gothic cathedral.

Compared to other cities, Cologne has a special department called Gay City Management which takes care of several events etc.

Cologne offers roughly 90 Gay and Lesbian bars and saunas in addition to the famous events like the Carnival and the CSD (Cologne Pride) which takes place each year in July. The CSD started back in 1995 as a small demonstration but today this is a huge event, including a parade with numerous trucks and other special things going on.

Culture

When you talk about Cologne, most people will think about the beer called Kölsch or the famous Eau de Cologne.

In Cologne you can find a wide range of culture. There is the Gothic Catherdral, twelve Romanesque Churches, the Roman-Germanic Museum, the Wallraf Richartz Museum for medieval art and the Museum Ludiwg for modern art.

If you like music you can go to the Cologne Philharmonic where you can see the Gürzenich Orchestra as well as the WDR Symphony Orchestra.

Travel Information

You can come to Cologne by train or by plane.

Cologne has a huge train station which has even connections with the high speed trains to Brussel and Paris. Besides this you can use the German ICE´s to travelle mainly wherever you want.

Also you can fly in by plane to the Cologne Bonn Airport, which has been grown over the last years as it is now used by some low cost airlines which makes it easier to get their.

From the airport, its easy to take a S-Bahn train to the center and then use one of the U-Bahn (underground) or buses to travel around in Cologne.

Also you will find the companies offering bus trips to Cologne or even from Cologne to other European Cities like London or Brussels.

If you like cycling you can do this as well, as Cologne is designed to be bicycle friendly.
