Corfu (the second largest of the Ionian Islands) is a Greek island in the Ionian Sea. It lies off the coast of Sarande, Albania, from which it is separated by straits varying in breadth from 3 to 23 km.
Although a lot of flirting going on and honourable history of Gay and Lesbian Culture in Greece, Greeks are not fully open to show the homosexuality as the society is not comparable with other European countries.
The Islands itself has a lot of history and Greek mythology, for example the Greek name Kerkya comes from the women Kerkya and Poseidon felt in love with this women and therefore back at this time he offered her to take her name for the unnamed island
The principal town of the island is also named Corfu and has his own University called Ionian University.
Corfu offers a wide range of music and festivals as well as several theatres.
There are the famous marching wind bands based in the names of Philhamonic Socitey of Corfu / The Old Philharmonic ( The Palia) with the dark red uniforms, the Mantzaros Philharmonic / Nea in blue uniforms and the Capodistria Philharmonic with the bright red and black uniforms.
There are special conerst going on during the summer ( mainly at weekends) at the Spianada Green gazebo, and they have a prominent part in the yearly Holy Week ceremonies
If you like theatres you can visit The new municipal theatre which was build at the beginning of the 20th century after the old one was destroyed on the 13th of September 1943 during a Luftwaffe aerial bombardement.
You can fly in to the Ioannis Kapodistrias International Airport which is located around three kilometres south of Kerkyra, just half a kilometre north of Pontikonisi. The airport offers domestic flights from Olympic Airlines (OA 600, 602 and 606), and Aegean Airlines (A3 402, 404 and 406). Seaplanes Air Sea Lines, a Greek seaplane operator, offers scheduled flights from Corfu to Paxoi, Lefkada, Ithaki, kefalonia, Ioannia, Patras and Brindisi in Italy.
On the island itself you can use buses to go the main places , which run several times between the different cities ( Glyfada,Sidari,Pleokastritsa, Roda etc).In addition to this there are coaches which drive twice a day to Athen and Thessaloniki.
Corfu is linked by 2 motorways, one in the northwest (GR-24) and one in the south ( GR-25).
There are also ferries you can use to Gaios and Patras.
