We have to mention the origins of the smuggling in Andorra. This started out of pure necessity to survive. The remoteness of the valley and its lack of resourses meant that the people had to look for different ways of maintaining their families. In the 19th century the Industiral Revolution signalled the end of the majority of the country's small industry such as the forges which could not compete with the new tecnologies. Unemployment and hunger led to the instignstion of the smuggling activities. The pressed tobacco and liquor were the most common types of merchandise that the people loaded up in 30 kg bundels to France. They acquired expert knowledge in the mountains and sypathised with the guards in the villages as they understood these men risked their lives. Many wehe lost in the winter.
The culivation of the tobacco still continues with new varieties such as the "belnt of USA". Nevertheless the tobacco factury has closed.
