Dubrovnik

Overview

Dubrovnik has become a must-see stop on the cruise circuit, and as it’s a World Heritage Site, it’s not hard to see why. There is a mix of Baroque and Renaissance architecture to feast your eyes on, plus miles of beaches and easy access to the islands for day trips.

Culture

Gay venues are limited in Dubrovnik. There are no exclusively gay clubs or bars, but gay and lesbian tourists are welcomed in Troubadour, a café in the Old Town, which is free to enter. Otherwise, it’s all about gay beaches. Lokrum Island, just outside of Dubrovnik, is a major mingling and pick-up site for gay men, and to help things along, don’t bother with those new speedos; it’s a nudist beach. Solitudo beach is also gay friendly, and can be reached by bus from Dubrovnik Old Town.

Equality

Dubrovnik is the most accepting of gays of the coastal towns, but perhaps not as gay-friendly as the capital, Zagreb. Be sure to watch your public displays of affection, just to be on the safe side.

Travel Information

In peak holiday season, you can fly to Dubrovnik airport from London, Manchester and Rome. There are also regular flights between Zagreb and Dubrovnik, and so flying in normally involves changing planes in the capital.
