After the reunification of Germany, Berlin has become famous as the world capitals of gay travel,. The gay rights movement began in Berlin at the end of the 19th century and the Berlin’s gay scene flourished during the 1920s. Berlin's Lesbian and Gay City Festival, also known as the “Christopher Street Day- CSD” is one such festival celebrated by The LGBT community. Berlin is Germany’s gay-lesbian capital .It originated as a demonstration by a few hundred people in 1979 i.e. approximately 10 years after the riots of gays, lesbian and transgender against the police-razzes’ in New York. Gradually, the Berlin Christopher Street Day and the Berlin Gay Festival became a parade of hundreds of thousands of people. In 2012 the Berlin CSD will take place for the 34th time. Visitors from across the globe, approximately, 550.000 people, attend this popular festival.
Many other events simultaneously take place around the CSD and the Berlin Festival. Some of them are the, the gay lesbian football cup ,a night at Berlin Zoo, the gay village fair in Schöneberg and the CSD boat trip on the river Spree. The festival timing is from 11 am into the late-night hours. Diverse musical performances, lectures and art exhibitions covering different issues related to the GLBT life will be organized. Berlin Gay Pride Parade, which is held as a part of the festival, takes place in Schoneburg. It starts at 12.30 pm from the Kurfurstendamn and Knesebeckstrasse. Next it goes towards Wittenbergplatz and Nollendorfplatz. Finally it will be reaching the Tiergarten Park and the Victory Column (Siegessaule).The parade finishes at the Brandenburg Gate at 4.30 PM. There will also a Pride Rally after the parade at the Brandenburg Gate.Many gay-popular restaurants, hotels, and shops in Berlin will have special deals during this festival.
