Sheffield may not be the first place you think of when considering innovative activism, but this year, the northern city marks the International Day Against Homophobia with an understated and interesting idea.
Local LGBT people will gather at 5.30pm at Barkers Pool, outside Sheffield City Hall, for a minute’s noise, rather than a minute’s silence. There will be speeches from various local representatives such as the leader of the City Council, followed by a minute for everyone in attendance to make as much noise against homophobia and discrimination as humanly possible at 6pm.
The event will be rounded off by a rousing performance from Sheffield LGBT Chior Out Aloud, and, most definitely, a mass outing to one of Sheffield’s many friendly gay venues.
