Manchester is fast becoming one of the UK’s cultural capitals, and rivals London in terms of attractiveness to gay travellers. Manchester’s gay pride has grown by leaps and bounds in the past ten years, from raising money for LGBT and HIV charities to becoming a charity in its own right and attracting thousands of visitors every year.
Aside from the huge parade on the August bank holiday weekend, there are ten whole days of arts, culture, sport and music to take in, both in the city centre and around Manchester. These events change every year, giving many different organisations a chance to showcase their talents and achievements, and provide a real variety to what pride has to offer.
One of the highlights of Manchester Pride is its street market, which is held over the Big Weekend (the same time as the parade). Places on the market are much sought-after, and you can be sure that the very best produce is available. From novelties to hot clothing, food and adult toys, there’s a souvenir for everyone there, so be sure to check it out.
There’s also the wildly popular lifestyle expo, an exhibition stretching over two expo halls. This is an opportunity for gay organisations or groups hoping to attract gay support to show off what they have to offer. Everything from gay rights groups to the NHS and the Royal Airforce to the Gay Wedding Show takes part, so for a look at who is supporting the LGBT community, take a wander through.
Aside from the cultural events, Manchester Pride provides all the partying and prancing you could wish for, maximising on its already healthy gay scene. Check out any of the clubs on Canal Street and the surrounding area for a good time after you’ve finished parading.
