I should admit that I am not the biggest fan of Berlin. Traditionally, I have only been here for business and given that the business is normally to attend a trade show, I equate Berlin with walking miles and dismal weather - well the trade show is held in March!
I resolved this time to arrive with a more open mind. I did. And my impression is the same as every other time. The sky is almost always grey and the people dress in a grey way too. Shopping is quite expensive and whilst all the major brands are here it is difficult for me to excited about shopping unless I feel as though I am getting at least a little bit of a bargain or something unique.
However, I do love Berlin for one reason. The architecture and history. The buildings are fabulous (at least some of them are) and the juxtaposition of new and old is quite thrilling. I also adore the clean lines and general feel of the former east berlin.
The restaurants and bars are quite lively and generally of good quality - although I am vegetarian so I always struggle in a country like Germany that seems to live on meat alone.
Berlin is a fun place to party and most places seem to liven up after about 10pm. So, you are probably better to sleep all morning, wander around the streets in the afternoon and party all night. And remember to bring a decent raincoat!
