As has been said before, Cairo is not a destination where you can be open about your sexuality if you want to travel safely. There are no gay clubs or bars, but Pub 28 is one of the places where gay men are relatively safe, in comparison to in the cruising grounds frequented at night. That said, it’s best not to burst into an impromptu cabaret performance as soon as you arrive; discretion is still advised. Pub 28 attracts an odd crowd of expats, middle-aged locals and various travellers, which accounts for the relatively tolerant atmosphere. The venue is quite large, with two restaurant rooms serving goulash and meze as well as standard favourites such as pasta and steak dishes for the timid international diners. In the bar room, which resembles a traditional British pub, it tends to get very crowded, so establish a spot on the low-slung furniture and hang on to it whilst you chill out with a beer.
