Built in 1864 and in the typical architecture for the Gärtnerplatz, the "Deutsche Eiche", which means "German Oak", has been a public bar since 1882. From 1896 to 1995 it was run by the Reichenbach family. From about the 1950s, the "Eiche" was a gathering place for artists, gays and lesbians, but also for people who admired that section of society. In 1993, the house should be gutted and completely rebuilt on more profitable lines. At least, after a world-wide protest, the Monachia company sold the troublesome property. Starting in 1995, the new owners rebuilt the house gradually and Bavaria´s most beautiful male sauna was created. In 1996, all the hotel rooms were elaborately restored, a lift was installed and the hallway was renovated. Throughout the renovation, ecological aspects were observed, for example by using the waste heat from the refrigeration plant to heat the water or filtering the water from the showers to re-use it for flushing the WCs. In 1997 the bathhouse had to be extended and in the following year, the restaurant was renovated by using the old fittings. The kitchen was extended and fitted with the latest equipment. Due to the mixture of traditional and modern you can be sure to feel at home. The new owners rediscovered the monument in Gärtnerplatz to the architect Leo Klenze, contributed to its rebuilding and finally presented it to Munich in 1998. Leo Klenze designed many of the city's finest classical buildings.
